The aftermath of what happened in the capital has shaken Torien to the core. Battling self-doubt and bitterness, he must find his resolve as he is sent back to Tasso to quell a violent uprising on the Road.

But Torien will need more than resolve to navigate the deadly path before him. His troops are inexperienced and his new adjutant untrustworthy. A series of murder attempts leaves the whole camp on edge. As the threat of mutiny builds, the mission seems doomed before they even reach Tasso—and Torien is beginning to suspect it was meant that way. He and his men are being set up to fail.

With his best friend in the hands of the rebels, his commanding officer refusing to negotiate a peace treaty, and his own men ready to turn on him at any moment, Torien must decide once and for all how much he’s willing to sacrifice for an empire he no longer believes in.

Thanks so much for taking the time and spending time with us here at Chapter by Chapter!

Thank you for having me!

Describe your book in 140 characters or less (like a Tweet)

A young Imperial soldier tries to rescue his best friend from a mess of his own making—and starts a coup against the throne in the process.

What was your inspiration for writing this book?  Was it in a dream? A thought while taking a walk?

The broad framework came from my academic research into the Roman world of late antiquity, specifically the Roman army, but the characters took it over from there!

Tell us about the main character(s).

My main character, Torien, is a nineteen-year-old Imperial cavalry officer. He comes from a conquered people group that’s been gradually (and painfully) subjugated to the Empire, so it’s a little unexpected that his best friend, Alluin, is a member of the conquerors’ nobility. Both are outsiders in one way or another, and they find kindred spirits in each other.

Do you have a favorite quote or specific part in the book that you really love?

My favorite out-of-context line is, “You’re going to need more snakes.”

Was there a specific part in the book that you had an especially difficult time writing?  If so, why?

The scene where Torien has to give a speech to his assembled troops was daunting to write. I always have a difficult time with large-scale scenes and any kind of dramatic speeches.

What sort of projects do you have going on right now?  Any new books coming out?

I’m stepping away from fantasy for a while and focusing on historical fiction. I currently have a YA historical, set in Poland during WWII, out on submission with my agent.

It was great having you on the blog today!  We hope you’ll decide to stop by again someday, and we wish you much success!!

Thanks again for having me.
