Blog Tour: Becoming A Butterfly by Mia Castile – Review, Playlist & Giveaway

Hey!  Thanks for stopping by the blog for our Tour Stop for
Becoming A Butterfly by Mia Castile!
Here you’ll find our review, Mia’s personal playlist for
Becoming A Butterfly with songs that moved her…
AND a giveaway!
Details can be found at the end of the post.

16 year old Lacey was never the center of attention, unless she was tripping, stammering, or being deposited into a pool by the local popular kids. All she wanted was to fit in, until one night when everything changed.

Jade and Tasha, her two best friends, helped her create an online personality that was everything she wanted to be – and it was only the beginning. In doing so she attracted the attention of Henry, her lifelong crush and next door neighbor. Unfortunately it was Farrah, her online personality and not herself, he was interested in.

She also attracted Chase the brooding, quiet, anti-social new kid of Brownsburg High School, who easily figured out her secret and blackmailed her. They forged a friendship that was both unique and complicated.
Lacey must decide if revealing herself to Henry and her entire school as the cool, charming, and funny Farrah is worth possibly losing him forever, and she finds herself needing to make an even harder decision than she ever thought possible. When did the lines between truth and lies get so blurred?

Becoming a Butterfly is a story about coming of age and finding yourself when you never knew you were lost.

** This book was provided to us by the publisher for an honest review.
We were in no way paid for our opinion **

How far would you go to feel accepted and part of the in-crowd?  What started out as a joke, progressed into a farce that can only provide one outcome…disaster.

In Becoming A Butterfly, we follow the life of main character, Lacey.   One night, Lacey, and her two best friends, Tasha and Jade decide to make a false profile on a social networking site, where Lacey takes on a whole different persona, which eventually has Lacey hoping to finally capturing the attention and heart of her long time crush, Henry.

Not only has Lacey finally gotten what she wanted, even if it’s under her faux personality Farrah, she also manages to snag the attention of sexy, bad boy Chase (whom I will admit, I ended up crushing after…big time).  Once chase finds out that Lacey is also the infamous Farrah, he blackmails her into doing different tasks for him and his band in order to keep her deep dark secret.  Due to this threat, Lacey and Chase find themselves working side by side, and start to develop feelings for each other.  Now, Lacey/Farrah are caught between lies and deceit, and must decide what is more important, a love built on lies, or a love built on truth and honesty.

Author, Mia Castile, has brought to the light the dangers of bullying and just how traumatic it can be to those it is directed to and how it affects the people surrounding them.   Castile has also brought the attention of how dangerous social networking can be.  Unless you actually know the person in real life, you never know who lurks behind a computer screen name.

In Becoming A Butterfly, we see bullying, not only in the eyes of our main character, Lacey, but also through the eyes of her younger sister, Lana.  Though Lacey has built her walls to just power through the school year and deal with the bullying she encounters, her sister, Lana, is new to the bullying game, and takes matters into her own hands, but at a serious price.

The writing style of Mia Castile is so addictive and so honest and raw.  I was completely engrossed in this story and in the lives of Lacey, her friends and family.  Like an after school special, there is an honest and great message found within the pages of this story that will open the eyes of readers everywhere, and hopefully help in getting the message out about the dangers of bullying and how we all need to do our part in stopping it.  I only wish that there was more in the end…see what becomes of Lacey, Chase, Henry, etc., or even to see what happens in the days following Lacey’s epiphany.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading coming of age stories.  Anyone who reads this book will walk away with something that will hopefully remain in their hearts.

I find music as inspirational as reading and writing. In fact, as a young girl I wanted to be a singer as much as I wanted to be an author. I very much enjoy finding new songs by unknown artists or lesser known songs by well-known artists. Because of that, the music became as much a part of the book as the plot did as I wrote Becoming A Butterfly. There are songs that I put on loop for certain scenes and other that I felt captured the overall feel of a character or even the whole book.

So, with that being said, here is the Becoming A Butterfly playlist.
(Click the song title for the link to the song on YouTube)

Wallpaper: Shotgun

I listened to this song on loop when I wrote the opening scene and again when I wrote the party scene near the end of the novel.

Taylor swift: Invisible

This is the way Lacey felt about Henry in the beginning of the story and even throughout.

Sleeper agent: Get it daddy

This is a fun song; I liked the sound of it for the theme of Lacey with her two best friends, Jade and Tasha.

Beastie Boys: She’s Crafty

I always try to fit in at least 1 rap song in my playlists just because it was such a huge part of my music scene along the years. So, She’s Crafty is another fun song and a throwback to my childhood.

The Temper Trap: Fader

This is another theme song, which is fun to listen to and got me into the mood for some of the playfulness between Lacey and Chase. ooh-oh-ooh-oh-ooooh (listen to the song and you’ll get that.)

You And Me At Six: Knew It Was You

This song makes me think about Chase. “You talk a lot about what you don’t know.” I could see him saying that to Lacey, often.

The Maine : Growing Up

I think this is every anthem of coming of age and growing up. You have those moments when simple reminiscing can send you deep into memories that take over all of your senses. This song feels bittersweet too, like you’d want to go back if you could.

Taylor Swift : Enchanted

I played this on loop when I wrote the first chat between Henry and “Farrah.”

Greyson Chance : Take A Look At Me Now

I felt this was Lacey’s anthem to Henry. She just wanted him to see her for who she was.

Mayday Parade :  Your Song

This is a great Lacey and Chase song; enough said.

Cartel : Let’s Go

It’s a fun song for encouraging and has a rockin’ beat.

Angels & Airwaves : Surrender

This was an overall theme song, which contributed toward the feel of the book.

Daughter : Landfill

Both Lacey and Lana feel beat down and broken. This was more Lana’s song but it fits both girls.

Icon For Hire : Make A Move

Make a Move is Lacey’s angry anthem. It fit into a few scenes, so also falls into the theme song category.

One Step Away :   Wide Awake

This is another Lacey and Chase song, because as their friendship develops they begin to rely on each other and think about each other more.

Cowboy Junkies : One

This is a theme song.

Parachute : Kiss Me Slowly

After the huge fight, this song was looped in my iTunes for the next major scene. Obviously it was a kiss, but I won’t say who kissed who.

Sia : Breathe Me

Lana’s song, I listened to this on loop when I wrote Chapter 25.

Atlas Sound :   Mona Lisa

Another theme song.

Demi Lavato : Fix A Heart

Lacey feels broken, but she realizes that she needs to look hard at herself.

New Found Glory : Summer Fling Don’t Mean A Thing

Henry’s Anthem by the end of the book.

This list is also available on spotify, and on iTunes
