Ask Me by Kimberly Pauley

presented by Soho Press!

Ask-Me

Ask Aria Morse anything, and she must answer with the truth. Yet she rarely understands the cryptic words she‘s compelled to utter. Blessed—or cursed—with the power of an Oracle who cannot decipher her own predictions, she does her best to avoid anyone and everyone.

But Aria can no longer hide when Jade, one of the few girls at school who ever showed her any kindness, disappears. Any time Aria overhears a question about Jade, she inadvertently reveals something new, a clue or hint as to why Jade vanished. But like stray pieces from different puzzles, her words never present a clear picture.

Then there’s Alex, damaged and dangerous, but the first person other than Jade to stand up for her. And Will, who offers a bond that seems impossible for a girl who’s always been alone. Both were involved with Jade. Aria may be the only one who can find out what happened, but the closer she gets to solving the crime, the more she becomes a target. Not everyone wants the truth to come out.

Top Favs with Kimberly Pauley

You’re home alone, there’s a fire! Top 3 things you’d grab and save from the fire.

I’m assuming you just mean actual things and not people, because otherwise my son and husband would take two of the spots! So…my computer with all our thousands of pictures on it, our passports (living overseas now, it’s just automatic, if not terribly romantic), and then I would have an existential crisis over my books and art but would probably grab my old teddybear. Because you can’t replace something that loved.

Top 3 Favorite authors (dead or alive) and why
Robert A. Heinlein, because I cut my reading teeth on his juvies.
Jane Austen, because, you know, JANE AUSTEN.
Douglas Adams, because he inspired me to write my first fan fiction.

Top 3 Favorite snacks while writing and why
Coffee! Because, caffeine.
Chocolate! Because, honestly, probably the caffeine again.
Anything sweet…because I have no willpower.

Top 3 Favorite books that inspired you to write and why
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (see not about Douglas Adams above)
Coraline by Neil Gaiman because it’s just a perfect little book
Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers because the book Mary was so different and so much cooler (if also crueler) than the movie one.

Top 3 favorite songs to listen to while writing and why
This completely depends on the book. For ASK ME, it was Truth by Alexander, Extraordinary Machine by Fiona Apple, and Mad World by Tears for Fears.

Top 3 favorite techniques to overcome writers block and why
There’s really only one: just sit your butt down and write.

Top 3 musicians/bands/groups and why
THERE ARE TOO MANY. You are making my head explode! Music is so dependent on mood that the answer to this would constantly change.

Top 3 favorite movies of all time and why
The Princess Bride. Because it is perfect.
Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope), the original one because it was the first movie I saw in a theatre and I fell in love with Luke. Even though I was five.
When Harry Met Sally. It’s kind of the rom-com of rom-coms.

Top 3 favorite animated movies and why
The Incredibles, purely because of the extra Jack-Jack Attack on the DVD
Despicable Me because it’s awesome and I want that to be my theme song
How to Train Your Dragon because, um, DRAGONS

Top 3 favorite movie moments and why
“Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Now prepare to die.”

Because IT’S THE PRINCESS BRIDE.

When Jeff Goldblum has his big reveal after being shaved (he’s an alien) in Earth Girls are Easy. Because…well, honestly, I don’t know why, I just love it.

The part in Adventures in Babysitting where she pulls the knife out of the kid’s shoe and faces down the gang leader with a whole “Don’t **** with the babysitter.” Probably because I still remember being so shocked by that the first time I watched it as a teen, but it was also really funny.

Top 3 favorite actors/actresses and why
Christopher Walken because no one else is Christopher Walken. I mean it. Not even close.
Jeff Bridges. Because he is The Dude.
Doris Day. Because I grew up watching old movies and can sing along to all of hers.

Top 3 favorite gadgets and why
Um…
Er…
My iPhone?

Top 3 favorite dream destinations and why
Oh man. There are TOO MANY. This is, like, the hardest interview ever. We actually keep a map on our wall of every place we’ve visited and our top 10 next places we want to go, which currently include: Cambodia (Angkor Wat), New Zealand, the Antarctic, Prague, Brazil (the Amazon), Viet Nam, Thailand, Costa Rica, Morocco, and Finland. I’ve been to Spain, Italy, Scotland, France, China, Kenya, Gran Canaria, Canada, and Greece (among other places). I want to go everywhere.
