Grace Mae knows madness.
She keeps it locked away, along with her voice, trapped deep inside a brilliant mind that cannot forget horrific family secrets. Those secrets, along with the bulge in her belly, land her in a Boston insane asylum.
When her voice returns in a burst of violence, Grace is banished to the dark cellars, where her mind is discovered by a visiting doctor who dabbles in the new study of criminal psychology. With her keen eyes and sharp memory, Grace will make the perfect assistant at crime scenes. Escaping from Boston to the safety of an ethical Ohio asylum, Grace finds friendship and hope, hints of a life she should have had. But gruesome nights bring Grace and the doctor into the circle of a killer who stalks young women. Grace, continuing to operate under the cloak of madness, must hunt a murderer while she confronts the demons in her own past.
In this beautifully twisted historical thriller, Mindy McGinnis, acclaimed author of Not a Drop to Drink and In a Handful of Dust, explores the fine line between sanity and insanity, good and evil—and the madness that exists in all of us.
Thanks so much for taking the time and spending time with us here at Chapter by Chapter!
Thanks so much for having me – I’m looking forward to my dark little book going out into the world!
Describe your book in 140 characters or less (like a Tweet)
Gothic historical thriller set in an insane asylum.
What was your inspiration for writing this book? Was it in a dream? A thought while taking a walk?
I was lying in bed wondering what it would feel like to get a lobotomy. It just went from there.
Tell us about the main character(s).
She’s a girl who has suffered extraordinarily, and is strong in all the quiet ways we don’t see illustrated enough.
Do you have a favorite quote or specific part in the book that you really love?
“They work their discreet types of madness on us, power and pain, and we hold to our truths in the darkness.”
Was there a specific part in the book that you had an especially difficult time writing? If so, why?
Grace has to recall abuse in her former life that was highly traumatic in order to see justice served. It’s not easy to deliver such a scene in a way that makes it clear what occurred, without bordering onto too graphic.
What sort of projects do you have going on right now. Any new books coming out?
I have THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES coming in Fall 2016 from Harper, which is a dark contemporary about rape-revenge, followed by GIVEN TO THE SEA in Spring of 2017 from Penguin, which is the first in a fantasy series.
It was great having you on the blog today! We hope you’ll decide to stop by again someday, and we wish you much success!!
